I think if you reread my first post you will see that I was not suggesting that the primary task of a university is for research but for the education and formation of the whole person, not towards knowledge, but towards wisdom. When I concluded the post by saying, “If the task of a university is to advance knowledge, the most sure way to do this is to create more researchers” this must be read in the context of the entire posting. Nowhere do I say it is my view. In fact, I said the exact opposite. “There is nothing wrong with universities which do research, as long as they also take as their primary task the education of students” (emphasis added). I was merely being rhetorical. Maybe the sentence would be better worded as “if someone thinks that the task of a university is to advance knowledge, then he should recognize the best way to do this is to create researchers.” If the university doesn’t create them, then who will?
